MEET CHANDLER

I am 18 years old. Autism affects all areas of my life, but I have great parents and a team that supports me at home, school and in the community.  I will need support my entire life to continue to enjoy all the things that I like to do including my micro enterprise Wild Bird Seed business.

For fun, I love all things to do with water whether it is the ocean, lake or a pool.  I like to ride on boats, jet skis and being pulled on an inner tube. 

I am good at swimming, bowling and ice skating.  I also love to watch movies and play the Wii.

 I like to work in an environment that is not too noisy.   My bird seed business allows me to use all the skills I have learned in the setting of a functional business!

What I like about 29 Acres is that I will be able to live on my own, but be supported in the areas where i need support.  I will be able to work toward being more and more independent. I will be part of a community where I will be able to enjoy living, working and recreating with friends.  But most of all I will live close to my brother. He lives in Plano, Texas!

MEET ELIJAH

Autism makes me feel like everyone in the world has a script, except for me.

I try my hardest to fit in every day, whether it be by trying to learn in the same method as everyone, or trying to talk about a popular subject, and struggling to do so. Small talk is difficult for me, as I tend to talk about subjects that interest me, but seems to be uninteresting to everyone else. This is something I’m working on, and I hope to connect with more people that share similar interests with me.

My main interests are playing Video Games, some popular, like the Civilization series, and some more obscure, like Dynasty Warriors. I love to learn about world history, especially the medieval period. I love to watch movies with my family, whether it be from the Marvel series, or comedies like Blazing Saddles.

I graduated from High School last year, and I am about to finish my second semester in College. My focus in College is Information Technology, which is about computer engineering, which allows me to gain a deeper understanding about how computers work and how to maintain one. I enjoy working with computers, and am hoping to become a IT Specialist after completing my courses at North Central Texas College (NCTC).

I am excited about 29 Acres, as it would allow me to see people living together in a community with common experiences and differing perceptions of the world. It would be nice to have a community that you could come home to and feel welcome and accepted.

MEET JORDAN

Greetings from Illinois! We are the Janus Family. Our son Jordan, age 16 has Down Syndrome and Autism. He loves to ride horses and rides every week. He enjoys watching Veggie Tales and playing on the iPad. He loves going to his special friends class at church and family party's.

We the mom and dad...I am a retired nurse...now homemaker and my husband has been working in non profit world for many years as a fundraiser.

We love the fact that 29 Acres in the country...as we think Jordan will thrive in a more Agricultural Setting, being outside, working in a garden, maybe feeding animals. I love that it is nearby a small town and close to the University. We look forward in building a community where our kids will make lifelong friends and we can be involved with other families who are in the same boat as us.

MEET KYLE

 Kyle is 23

Kyle was diagnosed at age 3 and had learning delays, delayed language and socializing deficits.
Kyle was very frustrated and angry that he could not communicate and acted out. He used his body to respond to the demands of the world and his own needs and wants. Due to intensive speech and behavioral therapy there has been great improvement.

He now has rare outbursts and can communicate with others better and even can carry on simple conversations.

Kyle does not have any social issues with family and is very loving and shows affection. 

Kyle loves to go shopping and enjoys collecting pillow pets.
He enjoys going to Sky Zone and jumping on trampolines, going to LA Fitness to exercise.  He also loves
music and music videos and enjoys going to the movies and watching Disney and Sponge Bob.

Jobs are very hard to find.

MEET SAM

My story is not unlike anyone else who has experienced having a child on the spectrum.

At first, you search for the magic pill, and eventually you find out there isn't one. You realize it's going to take hard work, determination and a LOT of love to help your child maximize his potential.

Sam loves Disney and all of the characters. He also loves Universal Studios and the cast of characters and heroes that they have. Each year, we take a trip to the theme parks so Sam can meet the characters and get pictures and autographs from them.

I am excited about Sam being part of a community, where he will be able to live and work independently, be safe, and develop relationships with people who understand him and want to help him have a fulfilling life.

April is Autism Awareness Month

MEET CRAWFORD

My name is Crawford Melton.  I feel like I am misunderstood by most people and that there is an invisible wall separating me from others.  I want to join the crowd and have friends but I don’t know what to say and I can’t get the words out when I do have something to say.  I can be very funny and witty but it’s very difficult to express myself.  I like my solitude but sometimes I feel lonely.

I love music, movies, video games and my iPhone.  I have a girlfriend from high school and we go out on dates.  I like swimming at the YMCA, working out, hiking in the woods and playing basketball with Special Olympics.  My mother and I cook or grill together and we really enjoy picking wildflowers in the country.  I like animals and have a cat named Diego that I take care of.  I really enjoy Christmas, Halloween, and birthdays and I love parties.  I like dressing up and dancing.  My mom and I go to a big ball every year and I dance until the party is over.  I’m currently working on my Eagle Scout project with my classmates from ATS.  We are going to be clearing and rebuilding a vegetable garden where we can grow some fruits and vegetables and learn about that.  I like camping and canoeing and have gone on some long trips with the Boy Scouts.  I went on Northern Tier with some of my troop members and my father.

 I love animals and am currently working at a stable.  My tasks include cleaning up the paddocks, haltering the horses and moving them from stable to paddock.  I also volunteer at Meals on Wheels and Fishes and Loaves.  I enjoy being outside and physical activity.

I am excited about 29acres because I feel like a community of peers will help me make friends because they will understand me there.  I also like my independence and will enjoy making my own meals and doing my own shopping.
